Conventional wisdom has taught us to be “kind to those less fortunate,” “respectful to our elders,” and “courteous to everyone,” so that we will be seen as positive people worthy of being chosen for all kinds of relationships. Unfortunately this 'wisdom' has failed to teach us how to honor ourselves in these interactions or give us permission to demonstrate our personal power regardless of the relationship dynamics involved. Because of this “incomplete training,” people often seem to give up their power in an effort to “do the right thing” in relation to others. Of course these actions are not mutually exclusive, but when we are faced with the desire to realize both values at the same time, we intuitively feel that it will be a struggle to maintain both so we sacrifice ourselves. This visceral response to self sacrifice can create a lifetime of powerlessness. This dynamic can show up in any or all areas of ones life depending on the person.
